Friday Favorites- Bye July!

Yayyyyy it's finally Friday! Even though it was a short week for me, I'm happy it's over and I have a weekend (mostly) free of plans. I also don't have a lot of thoughts right now as I'm a crampy, cranky mess and all I want to do curl up in a ball on my couch and sleep. So yeah... sorry for a lackluster intro-- let's just get to the favorites, shall we?

That Time I Got Kicked Off A Beach and Other Shenanigans

What a whirlwind weekend! I feel like it has been non-stop since Friday, not that I'm complaining! Friday night I hit up happy hour(s) with Blue for her birthday, and met a bunch of other cool people. The bar we went to was pretty low-key and not overly crowded, which was a welcome surprise for a Friday night.
blurry pics not taken by me...apologies
Saturday morning I was up and out early for Bloggers Beach Day. I was so excited to finally meet Alyssa, Michael, and Jenn (links throughout this post)! I should mention that I'm a Jersey Shore native; I've been going there my entire life, and Pt. Pleasant is one of my favorites, especially since they have a boardwalk. We hadn't decided exactly where on the beach we were going, so I brought along a cooler with some beers and snacks for us. Jenn arrived first, and found Martell's Tiki Bar, which seemed like a pretty good place to meet up, and she had even secured enough room for us on the beach- score!

Now, I realize that you can't BYOB to a bar. However they checked my bag, didn't notice it, and let me in. (They also let Michael in with a steak knife which neither of us could understand.) Things they confiscated? Alyssa's water from her water bottle (made me empty it) and Michael's sealed bag of chips. Ooooookay then. So we order some drinks, lay out, chat, share some laughs, the other girls go in the water (since I've mentioned that I'm afraid of sharks and man-o-wars and other things found in Jersey waters recently), take some pics (obvi)... and all seems right with the world.

UNTIL.

I mentioned that we ordered drinks from the bar, which we did. But in between, some of us indulged in the beers that I brought, mostly because well, they were there. I had koozies that I placed the beers in, so that you could only see the very tops of the cans. Apparently, that was enough. On Round 1, I was diligent about putting the empties in my (zipped) canvas bag. However, not seeing any security whatsoever, I got a little careless. There was ONE empty beer can in a koozie when security guards approached us. "We don't serve Miller Lite here. You have two options. You can either hand over all of your bags and dump anything else you have and be "cut off" (our wrist bands, for buying drinks from the bar), or we can escort you off of the beach right now." BUSTED. We readily provided our bags and our wrists without argument. (An afterthought: I would have played dumb and said that "Security" checked out bags when we entered and didn't say anything, but we all know that hindsight in 20/20...le sigh). Meanwhile, our waitress was standing next to us with our next round. The security guards left. I drank my drink while the other girls went into the water. As soon as they came back, I went to use the bathroom. Only, the guards at the deck stopped me. "Your wristband has been cut off. You'll need to be escorted to the bathroom by one of our guards."

EXCUSE ME???!!!

He wasn't joking. He called over a female guard to "escort me" to the ladies' room line. Cue my udder (get it? Get it??!!) I was like, "Um, I really just have to pee. You don't have to stand here." She was like "OK, but you can;t go back in." I was beyond confused. "I can't buy drinks anyway. Why can't I go back to my friends?" "You've been cut off. They'll have to meet you outside." Awesome. Luckily I had my phone on me, so finding me wasn't an issue. Meanwhile back on the beach, the girls were being told that 1) I wasn't allowed back in and 2) they had to leave. It was a "courtesy" that they got to finish their drinks. They found me outside- steaming- but we got something to eat and walked the boardwalk before heading home. And yes, we ALL agreed that the security guards were completely douchey. They were loud as hell about calling us out, meanwhile there were tons of clearly drunk people falling all over the damn place that no one said shit about. Whatevs. All in all, it was a great time and hey-- makes for a great blog post!
clearly rowdy ass bitches

Take-aways:
Bringing in a knife with which you could legit shank someone with: A-okay.
Falling all over the place with your drunken self: Also A-okay.
Quietly chilling with your friends= rowdy ass bitches that gots to go.

Sunday I was up and out and in NYC to meet with my mom. She works at TJ Maxx and had 20% off friends/family discount, along with a gift card that she wanted me to use since she doesn't shop there. I decided to get a big pasta pot since I didn't have one. We had brunch, and then I headed back to Jersey to meet up with Blue and her family for dinner. They were originally celebrating her cousin-in-law (is that a thing?)'s birthday, but since her bday was in two days, we sang for her too. Her family always makes/has sooo much food. It was great seeing them and hanging out for the afternoon.

I took off on Monday and Tuesday since her birthday was on Tuesday was on Tuesday annnnnnd... well, why got to work for one day and then take off amiright? On Monday we woke up late and went to see Trainwreck. Honestly, it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I thought I'd be LOL'ing the whole time and I actually teared up a little! After all the movie snacks we weren't really hungry, so we went home for "Bourbon Day."

Blue and I really, really like bourbon. Being that it was her birthday, and neither of us had ever had it before, I had decided a few months ago that we needed to try a Moscow Mule. What made it even better was that just a few weeks ago I saw Bourbon and Lipstick's recipe for a "Kentucky Mule." It's basically the same thing as a Moscow Mule (traditionally made with vodka), but with bourbon. One of the key "ingredients" to these are official "Moscow Mule mugs" which are made out of copper. I will be the first to tell you that I don't really care about what I'm drinking out of, as long as the drink is good. However, I've been proven wrong for sure. The mug makes a HUGE difference, and it was absolutely delicious!! The mugs were so COLD! We added ice and it stayed cooler way longer than it should have, even outside. Like, legit condensation. I'll never doubt proper drink ware again. It was the perfect ending to the day.

Tuesday was Blue's actual birthday. We decided to have an easy day-- we headed to Bradley Beach for a few hours, and then 10 min over to Belmar Beach for Surf Taco. I cannot stress my love for Surf Taco enough. It's basically a summer staple for me. Anytime I can get it, I will. Basically, it's like a fresher, more authentic Chipotle that I associate with solely with summer, since it's really only located down the shore. This time I tried their one of their Mahi tacos and was completely blown away. I'm usually a burrito type of girl, but I would totally put a few of those Mahi tacos away. Obviously it was gone by the time I thought to take a pic. I thought if taking one of the burrito, but they all pretty much look the same, no? So you get a sky pic from the day.

Friday Favorites

Woohoo it's finally Friday! I'm actually at work today because I'm taking off Monday/Tuesday and I can assure you I am certainly ready for a 4 day weekend! It's my friend's official birthday weekend (the one I celebrated last weekend), so we're kicking it off with happy hour tonight. I'm going to be DD so I can get up and out early tomorrow for our Blogger Beach Day! This will only be my second trip to the beach this summer and I'm so excited to meet some of the people whose blogs I read daily and spend the day lounging by the sea. But first it's time to share my favorite of the week with Amanda!

Favorite Song: Yesterday- Black Eyed Peas. A throwback perhaps, but I just found it and it's my new current jam.

Favorite Reads:
Have you guys seen this guide to Netflix before, or am I just really late to the party?

I've heard the term "safe place" before, but I thought it was a place where women who wanted to abandon their children left them with no questions asked. Or a place where anyone who needed help (from sexual assault, domestic violence, sex trafficking, etc.) could go for help. Apparently I was wrong, but it's still a very awesome program/cause.

Favorite Find:
You guys, I finally finished cleaning out my closet! I found this top in a bag of summer clothes in the back. I forgot how much I love the retro print. One thing I learned during this spending freeze is how much stuff I own that I don't wear because they're hidden away and I forgot about them. Rediscovering my closet has been like a shopping spree!

Favorite Moment: While cleaning out my closet, I decided to try to sell some of my stuff. And I got my first sale! Find more from my closet on Poshmark!

I should be a style writer lol

Favorite Funnies:
So apparently this is from 2012, but it's the first time I've seen it so I'm sharing...

Have a great weekend!

Beach Day Essentials and An Invite

I'm sure most of us have gone to the beach at least once this summer (I hope!), but I forgot to post this before and it was sitting in my drafts, so I'm sharing it now. It's also great timing because this Saturday I'm heading to Point Pleasant Beach, NJ for Bloggers Beach Day! This was Michael's idea, and I'm so excited to meet some local bloggers! If you're in the NJ/NY/PA area, I hope you can come! Just leave a comment for the specifics! Here's what I'll be packing in  my beach bag:

Beach Bag Essentials

1. Sunglasses- I buy cheapies because I'm forever losing or breaking them.

2. Sunscreen- I'm really bad at putting on sunscreen because I very rarely burn (once, maybe?). I try to put on at least 15, especially when I know I'm going to be out in the sun all day.

3. Towel/blanket/chair- Honestly I like sitting more than laying in the sand, but I also bring a towel in case I actually get in the ocean (very, very rare). This chair is perfect because it's low to the ground (also good for concerts), and has a strap to carry it easily.

4. Deodorant- I sweat like a man. I know it and hate it, but at least I've learned how to control it.

5. Book/Kindle- Though I won't do it when I'm with a group of people and socializing, I do love reading on the beach in general.

6. Portable music player- I just found this one from SunnyLife and absolutely love it! You connect it to your phone/iPod inside to protect it from the heat/sand/water. Smart!

7. Hair ties/hat- You know those commercials or pictures where the woman is standing on the shore, wind blowing freely through her long hair? That's not real life, at least not for me. My hair likes to get all up in my face with any passing breeze. I carry extra hair ties for this reason. Hats come in handy too, though I don't really look good in them.

8. Water- I like freezing a reusable bottle to take with me, that way it stays cool longer.

9. Snacks- To keep from getting hangry, and for sharing. Because sharing is caring.

10. Bottle opener- Because it's always good to be prepared, especially if you're bringing along a cooler bag :)

What are some staples that you carry to the beach?

Wanderlust Wednesday: Mystic, CT

Last weekend was truly awesome. I got the party started by attending the Foo Fighters concert on Thursday night at Citi Field (home of the NY Mets). I have to say, I've always been a fan of outdoor concerts in general, but I'm an even bigger fan of concerts held in baseball stadiums. There's just so many people and you can feel the energy. I had purchased the tickets when they went on sale back in January, and our seats were great- 3rd row in the first section, a little to the left. There was GA available but I'm too old for that standing nonsense, and our seats were right behind them.

I was so worried that they would cancel after Dave Grohl broke his leg at the beginning of the tour over in Sweden, but they continued. He performed the whole show from this awesome throne made from guitars. I tried to get a pic, but the lights were too bright and my angle was off (and I was using an iPhone cam). I found one online for you though. How cool is this??!

Uhh..... yeah, I'm not even sorry for all the pics. He's just so cool and seems so down to Earth. Not to mention their music, especially live, was phenom.

Friday we were up and out early for our trip to Mystic, CT. I should mention that I absolutely adore Julia Roberts and have wanted to go to Mystic Pizza ever since seeing the movie. Though we were only in town for a few hours, I loved the quaintness of it, with all small shops and eateries and bars. Our first stop was the Olde Mystick Village. Blue and I got some clam fritters (which I forgot to take pics of,  #bloggerfail) at The Boardwalk, picked up a Christmas ornament for the collection,  and took a bunch of silly pics in the shops. She also got some of the most delicious homemade fudge and fresh, toasted nuts at Franklin's General Store- or so she says, I actually don't like fudge! We strolled along the Mystic River and saw the drawbridge in action, wandered through the stores on Main Street, had dinner and beers at Mystic Pizza, and cooled down with some bourbon cocktails on The Voodoo Grill's back patio.

A note about Mystic Pizza: I had already heard that this was not the best pizza in town, so I had fairly low expectations. I just wanted to see it. Unfortunately, it looks NOTHING like it did in the movie. I guess they had to renovate it since the 80's, but I was kind of disappointed. First of all, it was about triple the size. There was no counter like in the movie; all the cooking was done in the back somewhere. There were pictures of celebrities everywhere, but it didn't seem like they had actually eaten there or anything, just random pics. Also, they moved us three times before we got to order, and Blue was pissed. But the very nice waitress did take 2 beers off our tab for our troubles, so that was unexpected and awesome. Also, I thought the pizza was delicious. I love a nice crispy bottom, and this one definitely delivered. The only thing regarding the movie was the fact that it was on loop on a large flat screen, which was kinda cool. All in all, it was worth the trip so I could finally see what all the hype was about! (Also, I stole a menu. It was paper, and I'm not ashamed about it.)

On Saturday we were up and out early again and on our way to Foxwoods Resort Casino for Blue's birthday. This was the main reason we were in the area. I'm not a big gambler, but she loves it and neither of us had ever been there. It was HUGE. And there were outlets attached to our building, right off the casino floor. I mean, there was an Old Navy Outlet Store... how I despised my spending freeze at that moment! I did get a few items, but only at that store, and Blue spotted me :) (There was also a Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and H&M, but I regained my willpower and didn't enter!) I only gambled away $40, but any time I won anything I got so excited. I guess that's a perk of not being a huge gambler, every little win feels big! I only played on the penny machines, and I especially loved the bonus games, which i got on almost every machine I played! The only downfall was that the Waitresses sucked. I figured they would be slow at night, but we were there during the afternoon too, and one forgot about us completely. Not cool.

After a few hours of gambling and a few more at the outlets, we cleaned up and had dinner at Johnny Rockets, another new experience for Blue. They were okay; she thought the burgers tasted like Five Guys, and I had to agree. Then we got some cocktails and headed to the show--

Jerry Seinfeld.

And he was hysterical. Even his opener (who's name I can't remember) was hilarious. His sketch was on the same vein as Jerry Seinfeld's- observational humor about small daily things/activities. I was a little worried that Jerry would be a bit dated, or totally different from the 90's show, but he wasn't- he was the same, talking about his family, his kids, being married, and just daily life. He was fantastic.

5 Ingredient Recipe: Buffalo Chicken Pasta Bake

This is actually a re-post from 2013, but being that the pics disappeared somehow and I made it again the other day, I'm re-sharing it :) This has become a staple in my apartment because I almost always have everything I need right in my kitchen, it's quick, and it satisfies my need for spice!

Ingredients:
- box of pasta (16 oz., any type is fine)
- 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (I just used a box of Purdue Short Cuts, 9 oz)
- 1/2- 1C of hot sauce (I didn't have Frank's on hand, but I suggest it- this came out HOT!)
- 1 C Ranch dressing
- 1/2- 1C shredded cheese (optional, but I think it was well worth it!)
- non-stick spray

To Do:
- cook and drain your pasta
- cube and cook your chicken (unless you took a short cut like me!)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- mix your ranch and hot sauce to taste
- spray your baking dish, and add your chicken and pasta
- pour your sauces over the pasta and chicken, mixing it all around so everything is nicely coated (I added 1/2 of my cheese here, because I didn't want it just on top)
- add cheese on top (optional)
- bake for 20-25 minutes
- enjoy!!

pre-oven

Bon Appetit!

Quick and easy! And really really good if you like spicy! This recipe also freezes very well.

Friday Favorites

Hey hey! Today I'm heading out to Mystic, CT for the day, and then Foxwoods Casino for the weekend for my friend's birthday. I've never been to either place, so I'm pretty excited! Let's kick off this weekend right with Amanda and some of this week's favorites!

Favorite Song: Lghtnng- One Night Away

Favorite Reads:

Wow, I thought the world had lost it with it's "Man-bun/mun" trend. Now apparently "mer-man hair" is a thing. Why, America, WHY???!

I've been throwing around the idea of getting a tattoo for a while now, and in my "research" I've seen a lot of semi colons. Now I understand the meaning behind them.

I love people who actively try to spread joy. This man is doing just that with his "Date While You Wait" table that he sets up sporadically in NYC subway stations. And he's non a creeper either. He's not actually looking for love, but just likes talking to people and, as he states, "to have a positive social interaction."

Favorite Moment: definitely seeing the Foo Fighters last night at Citi Field! Such a great show!
