Weekly Money Check Up

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on food again. We went on a date night on Saturday. The food (and drinks) were delish though, and I ate the leftovers for lunch.

2. Today I am thankful for coffee. Really. It was a rough morning.

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free thing I did last week that made me happy was actually making a dinner! I made a tuna noodle casserole...and it was delicious! Though C didn't try it (he doesn't like tuna)... but I think it's one of the few things I've made and actually ate (true story).

4. I will consider this week a success if I make it to Zumba... for real this time!! (Last time I tried I was a week early, and then last week I forgot!)

5. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an architect when I grew up. But later I found out how much math was involved so I changed my mind.

Book Club Friday: Mockingjay (Hunger Games #3)

This week I read...

"Young Katniss Everdeen has survived the dreaded Hunger Games not once, but twice, but even now she can find no relief. In fact, the dangers seem to be escalating: President Snow has declared an all-out war on Katniss, her family, her friends, and all the oppressed people of District 12. "

I read this last installment in just a few short days. I have to say, though it did move fairly quickly, it was slower than the other two. I can't say too much without giving the whole thing away, but I will say that I was extremely surprised by the ending. And I was unhappy with the outcome of the love triangle, though the presumed future sounds adorable.

Did you read this? What did you think?

Theater Thursday! Arthur

This week I bring you...
Arthur!

I decided to watch this because 1) it was on and 2) I thought Russel Brand was hilarious in Get Him To The Greek. And he was. But apparently, he just can't hold a movie on his own. Arthur was pretty terrible. Lame plot, lamer lines,....and really? Jennifer Garner as the love interest for a playboy??! Not a good fit at all. Though his quirky girl was cute, and they made it believable even though she was broke-phi-broke.

Nothing really of note...though he did clean up his act in the end...sort of. Meh...it was ok.

Did you see this movie? Did you like it?

Weekly Money Check Up

1. The most I’ve spent this last week was on dinner Friday night. We ordered in and I got an expensive dish... but I ate it all and really enjoyed it!

2. Today I am thankful for being able to do nothing while being sick. So nice to just be able to relax, especially when you're not feeling well!

3. Money can’t buy happiness. One free thing I did last week that made me happy was having a whole day of girly movies on TV!

4. I will consider this week a success if I get better soon!

5. The craft I am currently interested in right now is hmm not being too crafty right now!

Weekend Highlights

I haz a cold. Hmph.
So, this weekend was spent lounging around.
C lit the fireplace on Friday and we ordered food in, watched some TV, and awaited the snow.

Saturday he cleaned up his man-cave and I fixed our internets. Somehow we forgot our password for our router, so I did a little research on how to fix it. (Thank you, Google!) I guess this is why I'm called the "techie" one in our relationship-- because I was able to fix our router/password, reset my Nook, update my iPhone, and reset/upgrade his precious XBox lol.
And then I did lots of laundry.
He did make some delicious dinners though, so no complaints here!

I also tried the Neti Pot....because ya know, I couldn't breathe at all. It was terrible.
Ya know that feeling when you're in the ocean and misjudge a wave and saltwater shoots up your nose?
That is EXACTLY what using the Neti Pot feels like...only your doing it to yourself, and watching your snot seep out your other nostril...sorry for the TMI. And yes, it's gross. And uncomfortable. And somehow did not work for me. And C kept trying to sneak in and watch me use it... so awkward!

However I'm on a steady Day/Nightquil regimen which seems to be working ok, so I'll probably be back to work tomorrow.

Have you ever tried the Neti Pot? What did you think?
How was your Weekend?

C: "Why are you taking a pic of your Neti Pot? Is that for your blog?" SMH.

Book Club Friday: Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2)

A few weeks ago I read...

From Wikipedia: "Catching Fire is the second book in The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. As the sequel to the 2008 bestseller The Hunger Games, it continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Following the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of the Hunger Games."

This story had sooo many great twists and turns. I read it in only a few short days... it was so good! We get a closer look into Katniss's head and her internal war of who she cares for most, romantically speaking. We also get a greater sense of the rebellion in the districts, as Katniss is pushed into becoming the symbol for the people against the Capitol. The Capitol proves to be even more ruthless than originally thought as well. This story is about survival, love, and family... I seriously cannot wait to read the third and final book in this series! And I definitely recommend these books if you haven't already!

Theater Thursday! Footloose

No not this...

The original!!

In case I'm not the only one who didn't know what this movie was about, from iMDB:
"Classic tale of teen rebellion and repression features a delightful combination of dance choreography and realistic and touching performances. When teenager Ren and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small town in the West, he's in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. There is one small pleasure, however: Ariel, a troubled but lovely blonde with a jealous boyfriend. and a Bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople. Fast-paced drama is filled with such now-famous hit songs as the title track and "Let's Hear It for the Boy."

Can I just say that this may be the...second Kevin Bacon movie I had ever seen.

I'm starting to get what was/is so fantastic about Kevin Bacon... that guy can move!!
Also, it was awesome seeing a very young Sarah Jessica Parker!

I have to say,... I still don't really understand why exactly dancing was outlawed. But I did love the scene where Kevin Bacon showed his best friend how to dance...and the tractor race,...and the final dance with ALL.THE.GLITTER!!! Though I do wonder...if dancing was outlawed, how did all those kids break out all those awesome moves?! They could dance a lot better than people I know today!

Am I the only person who just saw this for the first time?! Or are there other classics that you recommend??

There Comes a Point...

Pinned Image
hellyes.

So, I have this friend. And she's getting married this weekend. (HOLLA!)

This friend happens to be Indian, and one cultural aspect of such weddings is that her fellow Indian family and friends do a dance for the bride and groom.

It just so happens that she, and I, and a bunch of our friends were part of an Indian dance troupe in college.
And since then, she, and I, and our friends have been dancing at each other's weddings (well, not mine, because I'm not married yet, but you get the point).

So of course, I started talking about doing a dance in the first week of November. My other friend, we shall call him Hat, is the organizer of these dances- he finds the music, choreographs, and gets everyone on board, so he was my first (and only, really) contact. He seemed all about it-- until December. First, he said that he had finals (hes in grad school)- totally understandable. He said he would get it together over Christmas break.

Cool.

On Christmas Day he emails me saying that he has an unplanned family vacation until Jan 1, but will choreograph and send all the participants a video of the dance on Jan. 2. At this point, I'm getting nervous, because the wedding is on Jan 14th. And, I could have easily created a dance because I was off the week between Christmas and New Year. But he says he's going to do it, so I believe him.
Then I don't hear from him. So on Jan. 4 I check in....to which he replies "It's getting late...maybe we should just scrap the whole thing."

SCREEEEEEEEEEEEECH.
Excuse me, WHAT??

"That is not an option," I tell him. "First of all, she already thinks we're doing a dance*. Second, we do a dance for everyone, and she participates, and now it's her wedding and we have to dance! So get it together!!"

He agrees to contact the crew, and get back to me. When he does (later that night), it's only to tell me that no one is willing to do a dance. "Some people wouldn't even let me get the whole request out before they said no."

I try to say that even if we just have 4 people- me, him, his gf, and one other- we could still do it. He says no, it's too late.

So I'm upset. Obvi. Because I know she's going to be upset, and if it were mine, I would be upset too. I would be thinking, all these people that I did dances for their weddings, now won't do one for mine? That's bull.

But then C has an idea-- maybe I could put together a video montage of us doing past dances. Not bad, not bad at all. Not the real thing, but at least its something. Except, I don't have any of those videos, because they were on my laptop which was stolen right after college. So I ask Hat if he has any, and if not, to check with another friend. I hear nothing back again. 2 days later, he says he doesn't have anything and the other friend never got back to him.

So now, I'm done. I can't make people dance. I can't chase people down to make them do the right thing. I can only control my actions.

 I'm gonna dance goshdarnit.

* She made me tell her in mid December if we were planning anything, because if we were, she needed to add it to the program and let the DJ know. So I told her yes, because at the time, I thought we were.

How Bout Them Resolutions?

My Goals for this year are :
1. Save money for emergency fund/pay down loans
2. Spend more time with my girlfriends (and make one more)

So,...how am I doing?
1. (please see check in below...not going so hot)
2. Have a girl-date scheduled for Thursday
3. Here is an example of 2 days, but I did pretty well at this all of last week! (see below) And I've planned out all of my outfits for this week! Hooray!
4. Success! We took down all our Christmas decorations, and then spent Saturday cleaning out the storage closet. Also been doing dishes and (lots of) laundry.
5. I think this is going well...
6. Fail for last week, though I did find a new recipe, I didn't get around to making it. Will try again this week.

4. I will consider this week a success if I can get everything done that I need to, with minimal drama/headaches.

5. If I could change one thing about my home I'd be living in it already!

Also, I would like to add a resolution to my short list... Cook one thing a month. I need to learn how to cook. I want to learn how to cook. I will learn how to cook goshdarnit!!! (And Pinterest inspiration will help me!)

Have a great day!!

Book Club: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

This week I'm sharing...

"Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

I absolutely loved this book!! I wasn't too sure about it, because I barely knew who she was, but the title caught my attention (yes, I'm that easy haha). She is so relatable. I loved the way I could actually hear her saying everything in the book. I especially loved her best friend rules, or “Best Friend Rights and Responsibilities”, which outlines her rules for being a bff. (P.S. There are some really good rules there!) I also love the way it's broken up- there are random lists, rules, anecdotes of her childhood, pictures...a little something for everyone. I would definitely recommend!!!

Some Goals for 2012!

Finances/Saving
create an emergency fund
pay back C
pay down loans

Girl Time
make more time for my girls. And more regularly. Also, make one new girlfriend this year.

Be More Put-Together
I'm always jealous of those girls who always look so put together, when in reality, I could probably be more like that if I just put in some time. So, I'm going to put in the time.
get my pants hemmed
get shoes fixed
only buy clothes i love, not like

Do My Chores
I've gotten into the bad habit of leaving dirty dishes in the sink, or laundry for 2 weeks or longer, etc.. All this does is make me feel guilty for not keeping up with house work.
de-clutter weekly
laundry weekly
dishes every night

Listen More, Talk Less
I think I'm a good listener, but I never remember anything anyone says to me. I think I need to focus more on what people are saying when I am with them. With this resolution, hopefully I will also not put my foot in my mouth as often!!

I think this is a good start. Wish me luck!
