Let's Look: Bathroom Organization

I love all things organization, so I was really excited when I saw this topic for this month's Let's Look series. One thing I learned lately is to have a storage container for EVERYTHING so you know exactly where it goes when you're done using it. I'm all about clear containers because if I don't see it, I don't use it. I can't wait to read some of your answers too so I can get some ideas on how to work on my "trouble area"- under the sink!

So first off- here's my bathroom. It's more long than square. I live in a rented apartment, so I can't do anything about those sick yellow tiles except pair it with dark gray (my towels, rug, and shower curtain- at the top [not shown]).

I try to keep my countertop mostly clear. I have a small basket for my nail polishes, a small ring holder that actually has sample size perfumes and safety pins (not sure why lol), 2 jars- one for Qtips and one cotton balls/pads, and then this corner caddy for hair and beauty products. (I don't wear much makeup, but the makeup I do own is stored on my dresser in my bedroom which is why you don't see any here.) Oh, and the waterpik I asked for one Christmas and still have never used (sorry Blue!)

I mentioned jars. I love the looks of apothecary jars for storage, but I just cannot bring myself to spend $15 on a jar. I found this hack on Pinterest many moons ago and I love it! I purchase a lot of those BBW 3-wick candles. When it's empty/burnt out, I toss it in my freezer for a bit, and then scrape out the excess wax. I also found this way of cleaning them out using boiling water but I haven't tried it yet. Either way you do it you get an instant container- and less waste!

Behind the mirror is where I store my mud masks, Band-Aids and Neosporin (easy access because I'm a clumsy girl!), and excess creams.

I have two small, narrow drawers in the vanity. In one I store my toothpaste, a smaller face towel, and some random samples. In the other is my hair brush, glasses, extra contacts, bobby pins, and hair ties (and apparently tissues, a Tide stick(?), and a really old dip nail polish remover!).

Above my toilet, I have the only piece of "art" in the bathroom, a poster that says "Enjoy the Journey" that I picked from TJ Maxx because of the gray background. On the lid, I keep my rubber duck collection (I work for a college and that's our mascot... and I also think they're cute).

My under the sink storage could use some help. Right now I just have things lined up, and everything else thrown into a bucket.

It's got a little bit of everything- hydrogen peroxide and iodine, contact solution, mouthwash, nail polish remover, sunscreen, femme products, my hairdryer, extra shampoo, conditioner, hairspray (listen, when there's a sale on Pantene I take advantage- don't judge me!), mosquito spray and bracelets. AND, what you can't really see, in one of those pouches in the back is just lipsticks, and the other is some more femme products.

I put the bucket on my counter so I could get a better look at what was in it- basically pills (Dayquil/Nyquil/ Mucinex/Midol), a thermometer, first aid kit, a pack of unopened toothbrushes, an unopened loofah, razors (mostly unopened), a Rembrandt teeth cleaning kit (that I didn't realize I had)... other lol.

What do you do for your under-the-sink storage?

What's In My... Pantry

Today I'm joining Ashley and Adrienne for What's In My... Pantry!

I have to say that I'm more fully stocked than I've ever been since being in lockdown, mostly because I want to make as few trips to the grocery store as humanly possible! I didn't cook nearly as much before this pandemic started because frankly, I don't enjoy it very much. I also don't really know how to cook? I follow recipes I find online, and I hate it when I'm trying to follow a recipe and I'm missing *just one (key) ingredient* which happens more often than I like to admit! (And then I wind up eating a microwave meal or takeout and feeling pretty blah about cooking...again). But the times demanded that I change my ways, so I tried to get everything I could possibly need. And for one person, this list is quite extensive!

So, a few things to note:

  • I live alone, so this is really all just for me.
  • Like I said before I don't really know how to cook, and I eat a LOT of pasta.
  • I don't have a walk-in pantry or even one closet- I use 3 kitchen cabinets. One for staples, one for overflow, and one for coffee/baking goods (and another small one for spices, but I didn't include those here). So that's how I'm breaking it up.
Having said all of that, here’s the list!

Staples:
  • Pasta (currently 10 boxes... don't judge me!)
  • Boil-in-a-bag box of rice and a packet of Lipton Rice Sides
  • Canned chicken (best to be prepared for anything!) (2)  and tuna fish (3)
  • Beans- black, red kidney, pinto, chick peas (those are kinda like beans right?) and lentils
  • Butter non-stick cooking spray (2)
  • Chicken and vegetable broth (2x)
  • Cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soups (for casseroles)
  • Heat- Hot sauce, diced green chilis, diced tomatoes with jalapeƱos, and whole red fire-roasted peppers
  • Turkey gravy
  • Hamburger and Tuna Helper (everyone needs help sometimes!)
  • Ramen
  • Instant potatoes
  • Tomato soup (2)
  • Grape jelly (peanut butter is opened and in the fridge)
  • Bread crumbs
  • 4 packets of Ranch dressing
  • Kraft Mac n Cheese (2 boxes)*
  • Chef Boyardee Mini Ravioli (1)*
  • Nutella and Go snack

Overflow:

  • The rest of the pasta
  • The other 2 broths
  • Canned veggies - corn (3), peas (2), and tomatoes (diced and crushed, 2 of ea)
  • More bread crumbs
  • Cereal- Honey Nut Cheerios and Cocoa Krispies :)
  • Oreos (2)
  • Gatorade, Coke, and Water... not sure why these are here actually!
  • Stove Top Stuffing*
  • Micro meals (3)
  • Hormel Chili with Beans
  • Tomato Sauce (2 jars)
  • Extra condiments- ketchup, grated parm cheese, steak sauce

Coffee Bar/Baking Goods:
  • All purpose white flour
  • Baking soda and baking powder
  • Chocolate chips
  • Cocoa
  • Evaporated and condensed milk (1 ea)
  • Hot chocolate, tea, and coffee (and back-up coffee)
  • Coffee machine filters
  • White, light brown, and confectioner's sugar
  • Stainless pastry bag
  • Extra mugs

Those with an asterisk annotate my ultimate "comfort foods." You may notice I don't have many sweets. I LOVE salty snacks. Not pictured is the variety box of 46 (small) bags of chips from Amazon that are on the way!

How I Do: Planning

Hi Friends! Today I'm super excited to be joining Alexandra and Lauren to talk about how I organize my planner! I will be the first to admit that I'm not a "#plannergirl" by any means. I don't buy a shit-ton of stickers, I've never used washi tape, and though I love looking at pretty, creative planners, I've found that simple works best for me. I've been using some sort of paper planner for the last 10-ish years, and I always get a Jan-Dec yearly planner. I've tried electronic planners but they don't work for me; writing things down has always helped me to remember them better. I prefer horizontal to vertical layouts, and I like having both a monthly and weekly view. I keep a paperclip between the monthly view and whatever week I'm currently in for easier access for the most up-to-date info. I also use White-Out A LOT. But that's just me. I'm a huge supporter of the "do what works for you" method. Here is how I organize my planner in 3 steps.

Step 1: Selecting and Purchasing Your Planner

I started with the "New York" planner that an ex bought me because I was/am directionally challenged and it included a NYC subway map (which I'll admit I referred back to MANY times). But then it was discontinued (around the same time we broke up). Around the same time I got more into blogging, and heard about Plum Paper Planners. I was in loooove. They were so big and pretty and personalized and all the other bloggers were using them! What's not to love?! The size and the $45 price tag, that's what. At the time I was commuting 4 hours a day, and it got heavy (and expensive!). And then I found the mini Happy Planner and I was SOLD. It's smaller and lighter but still had enough room to write everything I wanted, had sections for goals and inspirational quotes, was ring-bound but I could detach/re-attach  the pages (for smoother writing- I hate writing next to the edge/bounds), and had the hard plastic cover on top of the regular cover that I needed due to how rough I am with my stuff (especially when commuting).

Usually, I buy my planner around November. Unfortunately I procrastinated this year and my mini Happy Planner of choice was no longer available. But I needed something, so I went to Staples and picked up a Blue Sky planner. It doesn't have as much space for writing as the Happy Planner (and inspirational quotes or cute covers for each month), but it does have the protective cover, it's small and light and has the horizontal (vs. vertical) layout that I prefer.

Step 2: Filling In Your Planner
You purchased your planner, but now what?

(A) Monthly view: Personally, I start by going back to last year's planner and fill in all of the important dates/birthdays. (First time using a planner? Write down anything you remember, like anniversaries or bill due dates, and then go to Facebook and write down all of your friend/family birthdays). These are things you KNOW will happen. I update this throughout the year as new events pop up. I have also started writing my goals in the "Notes" sidebar of my monthly calendar.

Planner 1: Last year
Planner 2: This Year

(B) Weekly View: I don't write a lot in my weekly view because I don't reference it half as much as I reference my monthly view. Basically I write my meal plan on the second line (whether it's "tuna noodle casserole" or "Date Night!"), and whatever blog linkup/post on the 2nd to last line. Meals denoted with an asterisks are new. Occasionally I'll write what ingredients I don't have that I'll need to do the recipe in this section as well.

Step 3: Decorating Your Planner

I don't think anyone should tell you how to decorate your planner! This year I purchased these seasonal stickers from Amazon and though I used some of them, most of them are literally too big and probably meant for scrap-booking. That's okay, I'll probably use them for that purpose in the future, but I'm much more a fan of the productivity stickers like "dentist appointment" or "big meeting." Do what makes you happy!

I'm curious- do you use a planner?
If so, how do you organize it?

Jingle All the Way- Holiday Music, Movies, Decor

Hi friends! This was supposed to go up on Monday but like everything else recently, I'm late. I feel like Christmas is coming up super fast this year and I'm still not ready! I finished wrapping everything at my house last night, but still have gifts to wrap at Blue's this weekend. Luckily we have an early dismissal today so I'll be able to get a bit of a head start on the weekend! Anyway, today I'm sharing some of my favorite holiday music, movies and ornaments.

Movies

Elf
Love, Actually
The Holiday
It's A Wonderful Life
And of course... Die Hard

Songs

All I Want For Christmas- Mariah Carey
Santa's Coming For Us- Sia
You Make It Feel Like Christmas- Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton
The 12 Pains of Christmas- Bob Rivers

Decor

This is my little pre-lit tree. It sits on top of my coffee table- that's how small it is! But it's perfect for my small apartment and I love it. My mom bought it for me from Rite Aid or CVS or one of those stores on Christmas Eve a few years ago after realizing I didn't have one. I usually put it up the week after Thanksgiving and take it down around Three Kings Day (Jan 6).

The base gets covered by fake snow and some of the heavier ornaments that I'm afraid would fall and break if I tried to hang them. Below the table sit a fake present, my two goofy little gnomes, my personal shopper nutcracker, and an angel doll that I've had forever but have no idea where it actually came from. Now for the ornaments!

This is my oldest ornament, which I made in Kindergarten (I can tell by my shirt in the picture - always ready for a party!). The footprint is from a dinosaur. I have no idea why lol.

One tradition I've started in the last 7 years or so is picking up an ornament from wherever I travel. Here's a whiskey barrel stopper from Bardstown, KY, a little ship with lights from Mystic, CT, a light post from New Orleans, and a Christmas ball from Hollywood.

Aside from getting ornaments from vacation spots, I usually pick one or two up in those outdoor holiday markets, like Winter Village in Bryant Park (NY). The shiny hippopotamus on skis is one of my very favorite ornaments! The two in the middle are from my mom, and of course I gotta get my Star Wars droids up there!

I love getting ornaments from friends too. I got a set of Starbucks red cups with a mug from a coworker, the little owl from a fellow blogger in a swap years ago, this fancy Lenox one from a family friend, and "Love the Wine You're With" from one of the Mountain Mamas.

Hostess Gift Guide and Stocking Stuffers

Last week I shared my personal wish list. This week, I'm back with some gift ideas for the hosts and hostesses of those lovely Christmas parties, as well as some smaller stocking stuffers! (This post does NOT contain affiliate links- I just like sharing!)

For the Host/Hostess

Hostess Gifts

Throw Blankets- I purchased this fox one last year, and it's soooo soft and cozy! (similar)

Dish/Tea Towel Sets- I always think these sound like a silly gift, and yet I put mine out every year!

Wine Accessories- stemless glasses and cute stoppers are always appreciated. This set is only $15!

Fancy Coffee/Tea/Hot Chocolate- William Sonoma has a delicious hot chocolate set, and I've never tried merlot-infused coffee, but it sure sounds intriguing!

Candles- I like these Rewined ones because they re-purpose old wine bottles and smell really great!

Coasters- Another one that seems small, but are practical and can be personalized.

A Coffee Table Book- "The Year of Cozy" has 125 crafts, recipes, and other homemade adventures.

Reed Diffusers- I never really got into these, but they look nice and smell amazing.

Gourmet Snacks- Panettone and Italian butter cookies are always popular choices, but what about something a little different like Irish Whiskey Caramels or a farmstead fruit spread set?

Stocking Stuffers

Stocking Stuffers

Pens/Stationary Sets- Perfect for bloggers planners, office drones and list makers- extra props for anything sparkly! Kate Spade- $16.

Gift Cards- An easy one for anyone!

(Small) Make Up Sets- This Benefit "Work It Girl" set has a bunch of their best sellers. (AndI may have gotten the Better Than Sex ornament for myself!)

Candy- Not a basket like this, but I always throw in a few favorites!

Water Bottles- I like these ones because they can fold up when you're done. This canvas one also comes with a carabiner to hook on when you're hiking or outdoors!

Phone Accessories- I like this useful USB keychain, but portable chargers or a new case work too!

Scratch Off Lottery Tickets- Is this just an NJ thing? I always give and get scratch offs!

Fun Socks- Personally these Blue Q ones are my fave, but fuzzy ones are a win too! Blue's family has a tradition for putting $2 in a pair of socks... not sure how or when it started but I like it! Taco socks, Banned Book socks, $10/ea.

Mugs- I don't know anyone who would turn down a funny, sarcastic, or cute mug! (Similar- $11.)

What's are you gifting host(esse)s or stuffing stocking with this year?

Decorating An Apartment on a Shoestring Budget

When I first moved into my apartment 2 years ago, all I had were clothes. My heart was recovering from a breakup (the reason for the move), and my bank account was recovering from moving costs. I slept on an air mattress my coworker had given me, and ate on dishware that another friend/coworker had gifted to me as a housewarming present. This wasn't my first rodeo living alone, but it was the first without furniture; I had lived in semi-furnished apartments before, and threw out most of my own furniture when I moved in with my ex. But I was so happy when I moved that I didn't care. I'd get my place together little by little with time. And I realized a few months ago that I had done just that- and you can too (without breaking the bank)! How? Keep reading!

Here is what my apartment looks like now:
from top left: living room/ kitchen/ bedroom/ dining area

(Not pictured above: my bathroom. But we'll get to that later.) So I mentioned that when I first moved, all I had was clothing, which is completely true. But I did have some artwork and other odds and ends at my old place, which I was able to move with the help of a dear friend 3 months later. I'll note where everything came from. I'm going to break up my possessions into the following categories:

Mine (brought over from previous place)
Gifted
Freecycle- this is a website that you can sign up for by town. People post things they want to get rid of or will be putting on the curb, and if you want it, you tell them. It's on a first come, first serve basis. People can also post things they want or need, so if others in the group have it, they can offer it. The only condition is that everything is free. It's a great service.
Curb Pickings- ain't no shame in my game
Purchased

Let's start the dining area, since the only (small) pic of it is above. The dining area is not really sectioned off, so I created a section by using the back of a couch to differentiate it from the rest of the living area.
Mine: bamboo painting (that I picked up at a garage sale)
Gifted: laptop (thanks Mom!)
Freecycle: dining room table + chairs
Curb Pickings: lamp
Purchased: 0

Next up, my kitchen:

My kitchen is pretty big. It came with all of the big appliances: refrigerator, stove/oven, and dishwasher (which I have yet to use).
Mine: coffeemaker, some stuff on fridge, everything on top of bar (including the sign, which was from my childhood home), plant
Gifted: mugs, can opener, the other stuff on the fridge, wine glasses
Freecycle: bar, mug tree, dish towels
Curb Pickings: microwave, dish rack
Purchased: 0 (maybe one or two magnets?)

A note on the dishtowels: First of all, they were brand spanking new when I received them, tags and all, and were clean (I accidentally stained the one in the middle).  When I met with the woman offering them, she was getting rid of a couple other items too, and mentioned that she was moving in with her boyfriend and needed to get rid of some furniture too, but was selling them on Craigslist. At this point, I had been in my new apartment for only a few months, and still had basically nothing, so I asked her what she was selling. We struck a deal where I was able to purchase my bed (it was also new, like 2 months old, and was in a mattress cover)+ frame, the dining room table + chairs, the gorgeous solid wood bar, and my small nightstand for a few (maybe $700?) hundred bucks!  It really pays to talk to people!

magnet collection/announcement cards and my bar

Moving on, my living room:

Mine: lamps, throw blankets, a few books and pics/photo albums, artwork, ottoman where Roku/router sit, stand where TV sits, DVDs
Gifted: every other book (at least  3/4 of them), TV, Roku, wireless router, plant
Freecycle: 0
Curb Pickings: both couches, both coffee tables (one nested in the big one), throw pillows, bookcase, Buddha statue
Purchased: thermal curtains- on super sale last January at JC Penney

My bathroom is terrible. All the tiling and sink/tub are in a horrible mustard color. This is the only time I attempted to use Pinterest to help me find a matching color, which I decided was a deep gray.
Mine: ducks, nail polishes+container, candle holders + shells
Gifted: 0
Freecycle: 0
Purchased: shower curtain, artwork, bathmat- all from TJ Maxx

Lastly, my bedroom:

Mine: dresser (from when I was a kid), jewelry tree + some jewelry, bin with clothes, comforter/ pillows
Gifted: everything else on my dresser (hat and jewelry boxes included)
Freecycle: queen sized bed, nightstand, stereo
Curb pickings: Candelabra + candles
Purchased: sheets, curtains- both from Target
Other: I actually painted that painting at one of those drink and paint classes. I'm no Picasso, but I kinda love it.

Also not pictured is my deck. It has two cushioned outdoor chairs which I found curb side (a set of 4 actually, I have the other two stored in my basement), and a small table that was already mine from childhood.

So there's my apartment! And as you can see, I didn't purchase a whole lot! You just have to keep an eye open and know where to look! Do you have any tips on how to decorate when you don't have a lot of money?

We Need a Resolution

I didn't complete a single goal in December. Except Have a Happy New Years Eve/Day (which was kinda of a gimme, but whatever). I ain't even mad about it. However, I do have some lofty goals/resolutions for this year. I am printing this out and putting it up somewhere as a constant reminder of what I want to accomplish this year!

Money:
Pay off one debt: This is my #1 goal for this year.

Save mad money/budget: I have a number in mind, but not sharing it here (for now)

52 Week Challenge: This is in addition to the other savings goal

Sign up for that TIA-CREFF thingy: I haven't done this because I didn't know how- time to learn!

Home:
Get renter's insurance: I moved in August, I really need to get on this!

Call the landlord and have the little things fixed before they turn into big things: duh

Make the apartment feel like home: As in, freakin decorate already!

Make 24 new dishes... and find a favorite/go-to: 12 months, 2 dishes a month- should be doable

Learn to grill: I got an indoor grill for my bday; I need to learn how to use it!

Personal/Random Other:
Make friendships a priority: I haven't been very good at this lately. My friends are super
important to me, and I need to spend more time with them

Read 20 books: I was close to finishing the Goodreads challenge last year- this year I want to make it happen!

Go somewhere/do something new: I love traveling, but even if I don't get away (somewhere warm and exotic...mmmm...) I always want to try to do new things

Comment more/connect more: I am so bad at commenting. If I see that a certian post has more than like 10 comments, I won't say anything because I feel like everything that can be said, has been. I'm also terrible at responding to comments- it should not take me 3 days to answer a comment! Something to work on!

Appearance/dress up more often: I was doing really well with this in fall and summer, but with the cold came my laziness- I need to step up my game again. Look good, feel good!

Continue monthly goals to reach these yearly goals!

What are your monthly goals or yearly resolutions?

OHP: Apartment Ideas

So in the past week I have spent a LOT of time in my new little apartment. And also a lot of time on Pinterest (no judging!). Mostly I'm just trying to pick color themes for the rooms, since I've never had the opportunity to before, but I also found some cute home decor items that would be perfect additions as well!
