I really enjoyed this movie! I had heard about it before, but never was really interested enough to watch...then again, I didn't know it had Willy Wonka! And that it was supposed to be funny! Truly a classic, and so glad I finally watched it. Now maybe I'll watch the original Frankenstein or Bride of Frankenstein. 

Fave line: "Nice knockers!"

Theater Thursday! Arthur

This week I bring you...

Arthur!

I decided to watch this because 1) it was on and 2) I thought Russel Brand was hilarious in Get Him To The Greek. And he was. But apparently, he just can't hold a movie on his own. Arthur was pretty terrible. Lame plot, lamer lines,....and really? Jennifer Garner as the love interest for a playboy??! Not a good fit at all. Though his quirky girl was cute, and they made it believable even though she was broke-phi-broke.

Nothing really of note...though he did clean up his act in the end...sort of. Meh...it was ok.

Theater Thursday! Footloose

No not this...

In case I'm not the only one who didn't know what this movie was about, from iMDB:
"Classic tale of teen rebellion and repression features a delightful combination of dance choreography and realistic and touching performances. When teenager Ren and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small town in the West, he's in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. There is one small pleasure, however: Ariel, a troubled but lovely blonde with a jealous boyfriend. and a Bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople. Fast-paced drama is filled with such now-famous hit songs as the title track and "Let's Hear It for the Boy."

Can I just say that this may be the...second Kevin Bacon movie I had ever seen.

I'm starting to get what was/is so fantastic about Kevin Bacon... that guy can move!!
Also, it was awesome seeing a very young Sarah Jessica Parker!

I have to say,... I still don't really understand why exactly dancing was outlawed. But I did love the scene where Kevin Bacon showed his best friend how to dance...and the tractor race,...and the final dance with ALL.THE.GLITTER!!! Though I do wonder...if dancing was outlawed, how did all those kids break out all those awesome moves?! They could dance a lot better than people I know today!

Am I the only person who just saw this for the first time?! Or are there other classics that you recommend??

It's OK! and Theater Thursday

 It's Thursday! This week I'm saying "It's OK" ... 
...to want to dress up for Halloween even though you have no party to attend or children to take trick-or-treating

...to be annoyed with Christmas season overload, but start buying presents in July

...to wait a few weeks to get into new TV shows because you don't want to get attached in case they get cancelled

...to look like you're working hard so no one interrupts you while reading blogs

...to have already started your birthday and Christmas wishlist (see link above!)

...to change into pj's about 5 min after getting home

...to follow your favorite reality stars on Twitter
...to play Solitaire on your phone for two solid hours during your commute because you accidentally had your iPod on all day and now it's dead :(

...to genuinely enjoy leftovers. Sometimes it just tastes better the second time around!

...to raid your refrigerator and pantry looking for food to avoid eating out

Today's "Theater Thursday" is Easy A

I actually caught this on TV one day. It's basically an updated version of The Scarlet Letter. I was a little wary of seeing it because it looked a bit "teeny-bopper-y" from the previews, but I really enjoyed it! Also, I didn't realize that Lisa Kudrow, Amanda Bynes, and Stanley Tucci were in it, they were wonderful. I think her parents made the movie...they were hysterical!

High school student Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) finds herself the victim of her school's "rumor mill" when she lies to her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka) about a weekend tryst with a fictional college freshman. Word quickly spreads of Olive's promiscuity and, much to her surprise, she welcomes the attention. When she agrees to help out a bullied friend by pretending to sleep with him, her image rapidly degrades to a more lascivious state and her world begins to spin out of control. As she helps more and more of her classmates and her lies continue to escalate, Olive must find a way to save face before the school's religious fanatic Marianne (Amanda Bynes) gets her expelled and she loses a shot at attaining her own happiness. Theater Thursday: The Air Up There

Can you believe that I've never actually watched a Kevin Bacon movie before?!

1994

From IMDb: "Jimmy Dolan is a college basketball coach who wants a big promotion. To get it, he needs to make a dramatic find. He ends up deep in Africa, hoping to recruit Saleh, a huge basketball prodigy Jimmy glimpsed in a home movie. But Saleh is the chief's son and has responsibilities at home, since the tribe's land is threatened by a mining company with its own hotshot basketball team."

This is truly the first time I've ever watched a movie with Kevin Bacon in it. I randomly caught it on TV in a hotel room in Pennsylvania, before getting ready to go to a wedding. I really enjoyed this movie. I like the motif of family and the importance of keeping your promises. I really liked that it was set in Africa, and showed the trials and tribulations of tribe life. I also liked how Jimmy really fought to get Saleh, and participated in his culture.

Theater Thursday: Black Swan

"Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her."


I didn't really get this movie until the end. When C explained that it was kinda of like Fight Club. I didn't know what was real and wasn't, and it was kind of confusing throughout the whole thing. Even at the end I was like.."Wait...what just happened?" Though I did come away with one thought: Mila Kunis is definitely on my "List"!!
